Tugworld Review 2008 is an interesting read

The annual Tugworld Review continues to grow in size and stature. Published in association with International Tug & Salvage magazine, this annual review gives a useful and interesting cross section of vessels chosen from the massive inventory of new tugs built during 2008.

From this overview it is possible, at a glance, to spot trends and regional variations in the type of craft and propulsion systems being chosen by various owners for specific tasks. This latest edition contains 38 entries from a diverse selection of shipyards all round the world.

A description of each tug, or ‘class’, is accompanied by a photograph, a G/A drawing, and an outline specification. Where it is warranted, additional material is added, including a selection of detailed photographs. Printed and bound to a high standard, the book is presented in full colour throughout and this latest and largest review contains an extraordinarily diverse and interesting selection of vessels.

The tugs appear in order of size, starting with the smallest. Among the smaller vessels covered are Ugie Runner, the first tug to be equipped with the Mampaey DOT dynamic towing system and the Handy One, a North American approach to serial tug building with a standard design. The future of both will be watched with great interest.

Dawn Gorman mentions in her introduction the large proportion of vessels emanating from Damen and the drawing board of Robert Allan but that is currently a fact of life, with both gaining a very large slice of the overall market. Several examples of tugs from both stables are included and some interesting comparisons will inevitably be made. A couple of examples from Japan, the Fuji and Iwaki Maru, are particularly interesting and illustrate how the ASD tug has developed in the hands of those who first introduced the concept.

The introductory pages incorporate a News Review of interesting snippets from the towage and salvage industries. A ten page directory section at the back includes advertisers covering almost every aspect of the towage industry. Tugworld Review is an established reference that is much improved this year by rejigging the content to cover one whole year rather that the mid-year to mid-year approach of previous editions.
