Dutch dredging and marine contractor Van Oord has been awarded a contract for constructing the entrance to and reclamation of land for the construction of a cruise terminal on the Turk & Caicos islands. The client is Bahamas based T&C Cruise Terminals Ltd , and the total value of the contract is some 3 million.
Offshore wind capacity is set to continue its expansion this year, with the Kentish Flats project in the Thames Estuary nearing completion with another 90MW of power and the Barrow project off the coast of Cumbria, due to begin construction soon for a possible completion this year, also set to add 90MW. When both projects are completed, the UK will have 300MW of offshore wind capacity, representing about 40% of the world total.
Work was due to start this month and the project is scheduled for completion in March 2005. Van Oord will deepen the entrance to the future cruise terminal by 10m. A total volume of 350,000m 3is involved. The dredged material is to be used for the reclamation of the terrain. Van Oord will deploy cutter suction dredger Hercules.
