Calls for protection after 4th subsea cable damaged

The Swedish Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, confirmed online that he would be looking into the reports, which say that at least one data cable between Sweden and Latvia has been damaged in the Baltic Sea.

”The cable is owned by a Latvian entity. I have been in close contact with my Latvian counterpart, Prime Minister Evika Siliņa, during the day,” he said in a post on X.

“Sweden, Latvia and NATO are closely cooperating on the matter. Sweden will contribute with relevant capabilities to the effort to investigate the suspected incident.”

Suspected sabotage

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the EU Commission, expressed “Full solidarity with the EU countries of the Baltic Sea,” after the Sweden-Latvia undersea data cable damage.

“The resilience and security of our critical infrastructure is a top priority,” she said on X. 

”The EU Commission is committed to improving detection, prevention and repair with global partners.

The issue is pertinent as MJ recently spoke to NATO following a string of similar recent incidents in which sabotage was mooted.

Earlier this month, Mark Rutte, Secretary General, NATO, announced from Helsinki that the Alliance would launch a new mission in the Baltic to protect critical infrastructure, including communications cables, from sabotage. 

He said there would be new ships and dedicated aviation and new supporting technology, including ‘a small fleet of undersea drones’, dedicated to the cause.
