The battery manufacturer Volklec is driving vessel electrification forward with offshore technology innovator Walker Subsea to deliver a next-generation underwater power system for subsea offshore operations.

This multimillion-pound collaboration will see the creation of D-SEA, a revolutionary subsea battery pack powered by Volklec’s advanced 21700-5000mAh energy cells.
Designed to enhance subsea vehicle autonomy, the system provides onboard energy storage to Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), reducing reliance on surface vessels and marking a significant advance in autonomous battery power technology.
“At Volklec, we drive technological innovation by collaboratively designing, manufacturing and delivering sovereign energy storage solutions for our clients,” said Junaid Mujaver, chief operating officer at Volklec.
“We’re now helping Walker Subsea create a novel and powerful underwater energy storage device with a range of applications for the marine and defence sectors.”
Subsea power
Set to begin underwater trials in the first quarter of 2026, D-SEA aims to transform how the global offshore construction and defence industries approach subsea operations.
With the underwater battery market valued at US$5.9 billion, vessel electrification and onboard energy storage are becoming critical enablers for renewable energy site development and the protection of ocean infrastructure.
“It was critical for us to use a UK-based manufacturer for sustainability, supply chain de-risking and to enable sovereign capability,” said Vahid Walker, technical director at Walker Subsea.
”D-SEA marks just the first step in our long journey towards full, wireless capabilities for underwater transport, and the energy cells supplied by Volklec offer a significant step towards realising this vision.”
Walker Subsea Engineering, based in Newcastle UK, aims to drive innovation in offshore technology and operations.
The team consists of skilled engineers, experienced in the design and build of underwater machinery and integration to ship, with domain expertise in offshore renewable energy projects.
