Van Oord has commissioned two next-generation subsea rock installation vessels to boost its capabilities in supporting the global offshore energy transition.

The advanced vessels, designed for sustainable operation and high-performance seabed intervention, will be methanol-powered and equipped with state-of-the-art automation and dynamic positioning technology.

Larger loads
With a massive 35,000-tonne loading capacity and the ability to install large rock sizes, the vessels will reduce round trips for long-distance projects, cutting both emissions and costs per installed rock volume.
Their DP-2 dynamic positioning system will ensure accuracy in rough offshore conditions, making them ideal for stabilising and protecting offshore energy infrastructure.
Key sustainability features include multi-fuel engines compatible with methanol and biofuel, large-scale battery storage, and energy-efficient hull and rock handling designs, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions.
Van Oord, a leader in subsea rock installation since the 1970s, currently operates three rock installation vessels - Stornes, Nordnes and Bravenes.
These new vessels, to be constructed by Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore in China, represent a strategic investment in the company’s future and the growing offshore energy market.
The first vessel is set for delivery in 2028, followed by the second in 2029.
