Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) to Greenroom Robotics for its GAMA maritime autonomy software.

The AiP marks the first time BV has approved software enabling fully autonomous navigation, validating GAMA’s AI-driven system for self-navigation and vessel control.
“For shipbuilders and operators, this AiP accelerates the path to autonomy by validating GAMA’s design intent against class expectations,” said Harry Hubbert, chief operating officer at Greenroom Robotics.

Autonomous expertise
Greenroom’s software integrates multiple onboard sensors to provide situational awareness, decision-making support and remote or onboard operation. Its modular architecture allows flexible integration into both new builds and existing vessels.
The assessment followed BV NI641 “Guidelines for Autonomous Shipping,” providing an independent design-level review to ensure compliance with classification rules for autonomous and remotely operated vessels.
The AiP aims to streamline flag-state approvals, reduce operational risk, and offer a clear pathway to full certification for Defence and commercial operators.
It follows a 2024 Memorandum of Understanding between BV and Greenroom Robotics, which established a collaboration on maritime robotics, autonomous navigation, and operations management.
Alex Gregg-Smith, president of marine & offshore at BV, said that the approval underscores the importance of safety and governance in developing autonomous vessel technologies.
