UK tug and workboat operator Carmet Tug Company has ordered its first newbuild from Damen in a contract signed at Seawork this week.

Under the agreement, Damen Shipyards Group will deliver the vessel to the Merseyside-based towage and workboat operator on 3 July, four weeks after the contract signing. The short delivery time frame was made possible through Damen’s stock-building programme, with the vessel already available at Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld in the Netherlands.

Carmet Tug Company already operates several second-hand Damen vessels, including a Shoalbuster and Stan Tug, and turned to the Dutch shipbuilder when it required rapid delivery of a new multicat.

Representatives from Carmet visited Damen’s Hardinxveld yard in mid-May to inspect and undertake sea trials aboard the vessel before confirming the order.

Prior to delivery, Damen is carrying out modifications to meet Carmet’s operational requirements, including the installation of a Damen Marine NOx Reduction System designed to meet IMO Tier III emissions standards. The vessel is also being painted in Carmet colours and prepared to comply with UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency requirements.

“We have been very pleased with the performance of the Damen vessels already in our fleet,” said Carmet managing director Joshua Metcalfe. “So, when we needed a new multicat with a short delivery time, we enquired if Damen would be able to support us. The speed with which Damen has made the vessel available has surpassed all expectations.”
