BC Ferries has launched its newest battery hybrid ferry, marking a key step forward in its vessel electrification strategy

This seventh vessel, built for the operator by Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania, is the first of four new Island Class ferries equipped for future all-electric operation.

“I’m thrilled to celebrate these milestones with the team at Damen Shipyards Galati this week,” said Ed Hooper, BC Ferries’ executive director of shipbuilding.

“The Island Class is now our largest single class of vessels and they’re a critical part of our larger effort to renew and modernise our entire fleet to meet the needs of the people in British Columbia.”

At the same time as the launch of the seventh vessel, the yard also carried out the keel laying for the ninth Island Class vessel and cut steel for the tenth.

Each of the new ferries will carry up to 47 vehicles and 390 passengers, operating routes between Nanaimo and Gabriola Island and Campbell River and Quadra Island.

The vessels are designed to recharge during passenger loading and unloading, minimising downtime while maximising environmental benefits.

Damen Shipyards Group has selected Corvus Energy to supply Energy Storage Systems (ESS) for the newbuilds.

Once terminal charging infrastructure is complete, the ships will run solely on battery power, backed by an onshore power supply sourced from renewable energy.

Damen said it is supplying the onshore charging equipment and will support the ferries through its Canadian Service Hub in Victoria after their 2027 delivery.
