Damen Shipyards Group has signed a contract with Port Marlborough New Zealand (PMNZ) to deliver a newbuild tug for Picton Harbour operations.
Once delivered, the tug named Kaiaua will create New Zealand’s newest towage fleet, joining Kaiana, an ASD Tug 2111 delivered in 2024.

“Partnering again with Damen gives us access to world-class technology that improves the safety, performance and reliability of our towage services.”
Future-proof fleet
The state-of-the-art ASD Tug 2312 will bolster PMNZ’s towage services, supporting over 3,000 large vessels annually. It will eventually replace older vessels Monowai and Maungatea.
Damen’s ASD Tug 2312 is compact yet powerful, with 70 tonnes of bollard pull and high manoeuvrability thanks to its azimuth thrusters and patented Twin Fin skeg.
Designed for operational safety and efficiency, the hybrid tug features 360-degree wheelhouse visibility, a single sheltered winch system, and clutter-free decks.
Sustainability is a standout feature. The hybrid tug uses a system that generates electric power from its main engines, reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
The vessel is also equipped with Damen’s Marine NOx Reduction System cutting NOx emissions by up to 80% and meeting IMO Tier III standards, despite these not yet being mandatory in New Zealand.
Kaiaua, the name chosen by local iwi Te Ātiawa o te Waka a Maui, reflects the tug’s cultural and ecological importance, aligning PMNZ’s operational innovation with its environmental and community values.
