Damen Compact Crafts (DCCr) and CEAD are collaborating to develop a 3D printed workboat which marks a significant step in applying the technique to vessel design and build in the maritime sector.

Damen Compact Crafts (DCCr) and CEAD are collaborating to develop a 3D printed workboat

The innovative project, which will take place at the Maritime Application Center in Delft, will bring together Damen’s expertise in compact workboats with CEAD’s cutting-edge large-format composite 3D printing technology.

“This collaboration demonstrates how technology can directly contribute to practical solutions in the maritime sector,” said Charléne van Wingerden, chief business development officer at CEAD.

“The MAC was founded to accelerate exactly these kinds of innovations – and a 3D-printed HWB is a perfect example of that.”

Design freedom

The 3D printed workboat made using CEAD®HDPro material, known as the HDPE Workboat (HWB), is being designed as a highly versatile vessel suitable for inspection, support, patrol and logistical tasks.

The use of additive manufacturing in the vessel build process offers greater design freedom, reduced production time and opportunities to incorporate recycled and renewable materials for a more sustainable outcome.

This project represents the first phase in exploring how large-format 3D printing can revolutionise vessel design and production. If successful, it could pave the way for broader adoption of 3D printing in shipbuilding.

Damen will once again be on the quayside at this year’s Seawork exhibition at berths VB05, VB25 and VB26.
