A new multi-million-pound Technology Development Centre (TDC) has opened in Blyth, driving the next wave of renewable energy and offshore renewables innovation in the UK.
The GB£6.3 million state-of-the-art facility, launched by the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult, will support research, testing and demonstration of cutting-edge solutions in offshore renewables and ocean sciences.
“We’re excited to open this fantastic new testing facility in Blyth – providing scalable and expansive development space for the latest innovators ready to power the offshore renewable energy industry,” said Steve Foxley, chief executive, ORE Catapult.
“This facility will help the region stay at the forefront of the UK’s journey towards achieving clean power by 2030.”
Innovation testbed
The new centre includes a 1MW drivetrain test rig, a mini electrical grid system and dedicated laboratories for testing critical marine components under extreme conditions.
Located in Northumberland, the centre is looking to enhance the region’s reputation as a global leader in clean energy technology and supports the UK’s drive toward net zero.
It will also play a key role in advancing ocean sciences through research into energy storage, hydrogen, and battery technologies.
As part of the Energy Central Campus – a partnership between ORE Catapult, Port of Blyth and Northumberland County Council – the centre will also support education, training and employment in the clean energy sector going forward.
The TDC has been backed by investment from the North East Combined Authority, Blyth Town Deal, Innovate UK and ORE Catapult.
