Seatrium has completed the vessel build and vessel launch of Frederick Paup, the largest self-propelled hopper dredge in US history.
The Jones Act-compliant dredging vessel was constructed entirely in the United States at Seatrium’s Brownsville, Texas facility and will be deployed by Manson Construction Co in Mobile, Alabama, to support high-capacity dredging operations.
Announcing the delivery, Seatrium said Frederick Paup “sets a new benchmark for the US dredging industry with its exceptional capacity to dredge and redeposit dredged material at unprecedented rates.”
Complex build
The project reflects the company’s deep expertise in complex marine engineering and large-scale vessel build programmes and marks a milestone for Manson Construction Co in advancing its domestic dredging capability.
Seatrium’s scope of work covered hull fabrication, systems integration, commissioning and full vessel completion, alongside management of a highly intricate supply chain to meet stringent quality and performance requirements.
Measuring 420 feet in length with an 81-foot beam, Frederick Paup features a hopper capacity exceeding 15,000 cubic yards, making it the largest dredging vessel of its kind in the US fleet.
It is powered by 25,000 horsepower, with triple azimuthing stern drives and twin bow thrusters to provide manoeuvrability and operational flexibility.
The dredger is equipped with dynamic positioning, integrated dredging systems and power management technology. Its Tier 4 diesel-electric engines and advanced hull form are designed to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency.
Once operational, Frederick Paup will support navigation channel maintenance, beach nourishment and coastal restoration projects, contributing to the US Army Corps of Engineers’ goal of achieving 70% beneficial reuse of dredged material by 2030.
